We’re all back to watching Downton Abbey – all ten million Americans – and by projection about one million Canadians. As John Cleese observed, it’s very British to have money and less attractive to make it.
But a nice contrast is Iris Appel – real, still here at 95 or so, and as flamboyant as ever. She gives Maggie Smith as Lady Grantham a good run for her money in her documentary quotes. “Irisisms” include: “I’m still walking around – just to avoid funeral expenses” – and “If you still have two of things – one of them hurts”. It obviously hasn’t hurt her to have a husband who could provide a chauffeur and a seemingly endless shopping allowance – but her style combines luxury and thrift shop finds in an amazing and entertaining way.
